In the critique session, while I didn't receive as much feedback as I had anticipated, the input I did receive proved to be valuable. One notable suggestion was to incorporate my brand name onto the home screen, a recommendation that made me realise its absence in the initial design. I promptly addressed this issue.

Sustainable Development Goals Brief

We then moved on to our next brief which involves redesigning the Sustainable Development Goals to suit a younger audience, including a branded home page containing your version of the SDG, At least five SDGs aimed at the 10 year old audience or undergraduates and style guide / visual grammar and brand to accompany design. We have to design these for a smartphone.

What are SDGs

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of global objectives established by the United Nations to address various pressing challenges facing humanity. Adopted in 2015, these 17 interconnected goals encompass social, economic, and environmental dimensions aiming to achieve a more sustainable and equitable world by 2030. They cover a wide spectrum of issues, including poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and more. These goals serve as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. They are crucial as they provide a framework for countries, organisations, and individuals to collaborate and work collectively towards a more sustainable future, fostering inclusivity, innovation, and resilience to tackle complex global challenges while leaving no one behind. Achieving the SDGs is imperative in addressing societal inequalities, preserving ecosystems, and promoting sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Why redesign them?

The current design of the SDGs is primarily geared towards adults. The layout is quite plain and filled with a lot of text, which might be overwhelming for a child. While there are some icons and imagery included, they may not be enough to help a child grasp the goals easily.

This task will involve reshaping these global goals in a way that speaks directly to children and teenagers by using vibrant visuals, simpler language, and relatable ideas. My goal is to make these important goals easier to understand and more engaging for young minds. By creating a design that captures their interest and encourages their involvement, I aim to empower the younger generation, sparking their curiosity, raising awareness, and instilling a sense of responsibility towards building a better and more sustainable future. This project goes beyond design; it's about inspiring and equipping young individuals to actively contribute to positive change in our world.

Understanding Designing for Kids

I've done some research into my target audience (10 year olds) to understand their preferences and behaviours when interacting with digital content. From my findings, I've learned that 10-year-olds have varying reading abilities, so it's crucial to use simple language and concise messaging. This can include using larger fonts and clear typography to ensure readability. Visual elements are key, with children being attracted to vibrant colours, captivating illustrations, and playful animations. Understanding their shorter attention spans, I recognise that bold visuals and interactive features such as buttons or icons will likely be the first elements they engage with on a screen. Therefore, my design will focus on incorporating appealing visuals and interactive elements to sustain their interest. To facilitate easy comprehension, I plan to structure content hierarchically and design intuitive navigation for seamless interaction with the SDGs.
