Reflection

This week we began with a task, we were given three geometric shapes a square, triangle and circle. With these we were tasked with crafting a design of our initials and an animal icon of our choice with only these shapes.

I found this task quite difficult as we were given no direction as to how precise or abstract they should be. I decided to try it both ways and this is what I came up with.

This exercise really made me think as there were many ways to create the letters however i found that using circles for the B and C were the best outcome.

I found creating an icon of an animal a lot less difficult. I feel this was because the use of colour helps portray the animal.

We then moved on to looking back at the process of branding. We are currently in the Designing Identity stage.

This lead us to talking about the difference between word marks and logo marks.

Logomarks are designed to represent a brand or company through a symbol or graphic element that is easily recognizable and memorable. Logomarks can be created using various design elements such as shapes, colours, lines, and typography.

The main difference between wordmarks and logomarks is that wordmarks are logos that feature the name of the brand or company in a stylized font or typography, while logomarks are logos that feature a symbol or graphic element that represents the brand or company.

We then looked into the different kinds of logo marks:

A pictorial logomark is a type of logo that features a pictorial or graphic element that represents a brand or company. The pictorial element can be an abstract symbol, a simplified graphic or a more complex illustration.

Pictorial logomarks can be powerful and effective in conveying the identity of a brand or company. They often use simple, recognizable shapes or images that can be easily associated with the brand, making them easy to remember and recognize.

Examples of well-known pictorial logomarks include the Apple logo, which features a stylized apple with a bite taken out of it, the Nike "Swoosh" logo, which features a simple checkmark shape, and the Twitter bird icon, which features a stylized bird in flight.

A monogram or letterform logomark is a type of logo that consists of one or more letters of a company or brand name, arranged in a unique and stylized way. The letters are typically designed in a way that creates a distinct and recognizable visual symbol, with the aim of making the brand memorable and easily identifiable.

Monogram logos are often used by companies that have long or complicated names, or that want to emphasize the initials of their name. They can be simple or complex, using various design elements such as shapes, colours, and typography.

Examples of well-known monogram or letterform logomarks include IBM, HBO, and Chanel, all of which use stylized versions of their initials in their logos
