Reflection

In this week’s lecture we talked about many different styles of illustration and I found this very interesting because when I first think of illustration I often go straight to drawing either that be on paper or digitally for example procreate or adobe illustrator. However I found that this is not the case and that illustration can actually be made with a wide variety of things including the fax machine and photocopier as early digital examples and even using collaging. I would like to try some of these techniques in the future as I feel it would be eye opening that everything doesn’t need to be done using a computer and digital programmes.

Artist Research

I decided to look at Marion Deuchars work this week as it caught my eye during the lecture. The use of bright colours and the painterly style in her work on the Carluccios Menus is something I find really effective in an illustration.

Marion Deuchars is a British illustrator and author who was commissioned to design the menus for the Italian restaurant chain Carluccio's. Deuchars' design features playful typography that adds a whimsical touch to the menu. The use of different lettering styles and sizes also creates hierarchy and visual interest. The menus include hand-drawn illustrations of ingredients such as tomatoes, olives, and basil. These illustrations not only add visual interest but also help to convey the freshness and quality of the food. Deuchars' design uses a limited colour palette of red, green, and white, which is reminiscent of the colours of the Italian flag. This creates a cohesive look across the menu items and reinforces the Italian theme. The design uses negative space effectively to create visual interest and guide the eye. For example, the illustrations of ingredients are often surrounded by white space, which makes them stand out and draws attention to the food.

Overall, Marion Deuchars' design for the Carluccio's menus is effective because it combines visual interest with functionality. The playful typography and hand-drawn illustrations create a unique and memorable design, while the use of hierarchy and negative space make the menus easy to read and navigate.

Wireframing

I decided to take some of my favourite sketches from last week and do them of a higher standard to decide on the design I wanted for my app. I used procreate to create these wireframes.

For my first set I completed these three screens. In this design I decided to keep the illustrative aspect in the album art and playlist covers and keep the background quite simple. I think this design is very effective and looks alot like what I had visioned however the ‘Find’ screen isn’t quite as effective as I’d hoped. To fix this I will create more sketches and figure out how I would like it to look and try and find what is missing.

This is not the finished icon design.

For this set of wireframes I also used procreate but this time I decided to incorporate the illustration aspect in the background and keep the album art quite simple. I like this outcome however it doesn’t include a lot of the illustration I would like.

Master Apprentice Exercise

For this master apprentice exercise we were given a range of music apps to replicate. I started exploring adobe illustrator to create this outcome. I found this particular master apprentice really helpful as i am currently creating wireframes for my music app and this was a very useful task to help guide me through how to create certain shapes and styles that I may possibly use in my app in the future.
