Designing for the future

future:

preferable - not trying to predict future but more using designs to define a preferable future for a group of people, how to we avoid something or how do we steer in that direction

probable - whats most likely to happen unless some extreme upheaval

plausible - exploring alternative futures, kinda like damage control what could happen lets be prepared

possible - scientifically possible and a future that we kinda steer ourselves towards, significant science work involved

Speculative design

• encourages imagination - think beyond immediate technological advancements
• challeneges norms - social polictical and ethical,
• shapes innovation - many real world innovations start as speculative design
• prepares us for change

its not about predicitng the future its about theorising

How to we prectice speculative deisgn

• identify future concern
• ask what if questions
• create future scenarios
• design artefacts and prototypes
