In week 02, we focused on typography and looked into the history of certain type faces: futura, palatino, times, gill sans, helvetica and baskerville which i have researched further for my type specimen screen.

We looked into Johannes Gutenberg who was a German inventor and craftsman who introduced letterpress printing to Europe with his movable-type printing press. Though not the first of its kind, earlier designs were restricted to East Asia, and Gutenberg's version was the first to spread across the world

The type of mechanized printing press that Johannes Gutenberg created in the 15th century made it possible for the first time in Europe to manufacture large numbers of books for relatively little cost. Books and other printed matter consequently became available to a wide general audience, greatly contributing to the spread of literacy and education in Europe. Gutenberg did not, however, invent printing with movable type, which occurred in Korea in the 14th century.

We also took a look at Albrecht Dürer, who was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist of the German Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints.

We then looked at understanding typography and went through the importance of the basics such as type specification, readability, letter spacing, line length, line height, paragraph spacing and type alignment. I found this very helpful to go over everything that is important in typography.
